What to Expect at the Gun Store
Buying a firearm in Massachusetts can seem complicated, especially if it is your first time. Between Massachusetts licensing requirements, federal paperwork, background checks, and state firearm laws, there are more steps involved than simply walking into a store and purchasing a gun.
The good news is that the process is fairly straightforward once you know what to expect.

Step 1: Make Sure You Have the Proper Massachusetts Firearms License
Before purchasing a firearm in Massachusetts, you need to have the appropriate Massachusetts firearms license or otherwise qualify for an applicable exemption.
For most customers, this means having a valid License to Carry (LTC) or Firearms Identification (FID) Card, depending on the firearm and transaction.
Your license needs to be valid at the time of the transaction. Massachusetts firearms dealers are required to verify the status of the license or other documentation presented before transferring a firearm.
If you haven’t received your firearms license yet, your first step should generally be completing the Massachusetts licensing process through your local licensing authority.
Step 2: Bring Your License and Identification
When you come to the gun store to purchase a firearm, bring your:
- Massachusetts LTC or FID, as applicable
- Valid government-issued photo identification
- Massachusetts firearms license PIN
Your firearms license PIN is important because it is used as part of Massachusetts firearm transactions. If you don’t know your PIN, it can be obtained through the Massachusetts MIRCS Unified Gun Portal.
It’s a good idea to have everything ready before coming in, especially if you plan on purchasing and taking possession of a firearm that day.
Step 3: Choose the Right Firearm
Now comes the fun part: choosing a firearm.
A good gun shop shouldn’t simply try to sell you whatever is behind the counter. The right firearm depends on what you’re planning to use it for.
Some customers are looking for a concealed-carry handgun. Others want a firearm for home defense, target shooting, hunting, competition, or simply recreational shooting.
If you’re buying your first handgun, things like grip size, trigger, controls, weight, capacity, optics compatibility, and how comfortably you can operate the firearm can make a significant difference.
At Pioneer Arms, we’re happy to let customers compare different options and ask questions. If you aren’t sure what you want when you walk through the door, that’s completely fine.
Step 4: Make Sure the Firearm Can Be Sold in Massachusetts
This is one of the biggest differences between buying a gun in Massachusetts and buying one in many other states.
Just because you see a firearm for sale online or advertised by a manufacturer does not necessarily mean a Massachusetts dealer can transfer that particular firearm to you.
Massachusetts has state-specific laws and regulations affecting which firearms dealers can sell or transfer.
For handguns, one consideration is the Massachusetts Approved Firearms Roster. The Commonwealth periodically updates this roster with makes and models that have satisfied the applicable statutory testing requirements.
However, being listed on the Approved Firearms Roster does not necessarily mean that a handgun automatically satisfies every Massachusetts requirement. Other state laws and regulations can also apply.
This is why you’ll often hear terms such as “MA compliant” or “Massachusetts legal” when shopping for firearms.

Step 5: Complete ATF Form 4473
When purchasing a firearm from a federally licensed firearms dealer, you’ll generally complete ATF Form 4473 – Firearms Transaction Record.
The form collects identifying information and asks a series of questions used to determine whether you are legally eligible to receive a firearm.
Take your time and read each question carefully.
Don’t guess at an answer, and don’t have someone else answer the questions for you. If you don’t understand what a question is asking, ask the dealer for clarification.
The person actually purchasing the firearm must complete the applicable purchaser portions of the form.
Step 6: The Background Check
Once the required information and paperwork have been completed, the dealer conducts the required background-check process.
The dealer will verify your identification and firearms license information and complete the required federal and Massachusetts procedures.
This isn’t something customers need to arrange ahead of time. We handle the dealer side of the process while you’re at the store.
Depending on the circumstances and the response received from the applicable system, the transaction may be able to proceed or additional action or time may be required.
Step 7: Massachusetts Transaction Reporting
Massachusetts also has its own firearm transaction-recording requirements.
When you purchase a firearm from a Massachusetts licensed firearms dealer, the dealer reports the dealer transaction through the state’s system. You don’t need to separately register that dealer purchase yourself after leaving the store.
This is different from certain private transfers and other situations in which the individual firearm owner may have reporting responsibilities.
Step 8: Complete the Transfer and Take Your Firearm Home
Once all applicable federal and Massachusetts requirements have been satisfied and the dealer is legally permitted to proceed with the transfer, the transaction can be completed.
Before leaving, make sure you understand how to safely operate, transport, and store your new firearm.

Can I Buy a Gun Online in Massachusetts?
Yes — but buying a firearm online isn’t the same as ordering an ordinary product and having it shipped directly to your house.
In most cases, a firearm purchased online will be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL), such as Pioneer Arms.
You then come to the dealer and complete the required transfer process before taking possession of the firearm.
Before ordering a firearm online, however, you should make sure the firearm can actually be transferred to you under Massachusetts law.
We strongly recommend contacting us before ordering a firearm you’re unsure about.
It can save you the headache and expense of having a firearm shipped to Massachusetts that cannot be transferred to you.
Can I Buy a Gun the Same Day in Massachusetts?
Potentially, yes.
If you have the appropriate valid Massachusetts firearms license, have the necessary identification and information, the firearm can legally be transferred to you, and all required checks and paperwork are successfully completed, a transaction may be completed during the same visit.
However, every transaction is different, and a delay or another issue can prevent immediate completion.
What If This Is My First Gun?
Don’t worry about walking into a gun store without knowing everything.
You aren’t expected to be an expert.

Some useful questions to think about before shopping include:
- What will I primarily use the firearm for?
- Do I plan to carry it concealed?

- How important are firearm size and weight?
- What is my budget?
- Do I need a holster, ammunition, safe, or other accessories?
There’s no reason to rush the decision. A firearm that works well for one person isn’t necessarily the best choice for someone else.
